The glittering world of Philippine cinema, once a beacon of wonder, shone brilliantly during its golden age. A significant chapter of this cinematic history was etched by a beloved child star, Tessie Agana. Today, her legacy is brought back to life in the mesmerizing book titled “The Legend of Tessie Agana: Beloved Child Star of the Philippines An Intimate Portrait of My Mother.”

In the sprawling tapestry of Philippine cinema, few stars have left as indelible a mark as Tessie Agana. The bygone era of Philippine film, often referred to as the “Golden Age,” was marked by stunning artistry and a thriving movie industry. Tessie Agana stood at the center of this cinematic whirlwind, her performances capturing the hearts of millions and earning her a place in the pantheon of Philippine film legends.

As we delve into this enchanting world, her daughter, Mylene Agana Jao Richardson, takes us on an intimate journey through the captivating stories of her mother’s life and career.  As Tessie Agana’s daughter, she provides a deeply personal and affectionate account of her mother’s life.

“The process of writing this book was an eye-opener in every way, and my mother and I have rebuilt a more fulfilling relationship,” Mylene said. “We have learned to embrace the past and celebrate the present. This story, I believe, can only be told from the lens of a family member revealing details out of love, respect, and honor.” Through heartfelt anecdotes and cherished memories, Mylene invites readers to rediscover the life and times of a beloved icon. The book is a tribute to Tessie’s enduring influence on Philippine cinema and culture.

Born in Singhian Clinic in Manila, Tessie embarked on her cinematic journey as a child prodigy.

Tessie’s on-screen charisma knew no bounds. Her performances were not just remarkable for her age but were marked by a profound depth of emotion that transcended the boundaries of her youth. Her portrayal of endearing and relatable characters struck a chord with audiences across the Philippines, earning her a special place in the hearts of viewers of all ages.

Tessie Agana’s impact extended beyond the silver screen, leaving a lasting mark on the hearts and minds of the Filipino people. Her extraordinary journey was marked by perseverance, resilience, and an unwavering passion for the art of cinema. She navigated the challenges of fame and success with grace and poise, and her story is one of inspiration.

“The Legend of Tessie Agana” is not just a biography; it is a testament to the rich history of Philippine cinema during its golden age. This book invites readers to time travel to an era when the stars of the silver screen and the art of storytelling through cinema was at its zenith.

As we journey back to the golden age of Philippine movies through the pages of this remarkable book, we not only honor Tessie Agana’s contributions but also celebrate the cultural significance of Philippine cinema. This is a tale that transcends generations, reminding us of the power of storytelling and the magic of the silver screen.

Today, Mylene continues to share her mother’s remarkable story through anecdotes and narratives of Tessie’s adulthood. From complex family dynamics to mental health awareness, the book covers different facets of a child star’s life. Though Tessie Agana is now living with dementia, her legacy lives on through her daughter.

“It’s rare for a daughter to put into poignant prose the travails and triumphs of her mother,” said Gina Vera-Perez De Venecia, Humanitarian and former Congresswoman in the Philippines. “It is rarer still for a mother to view her entire life through the prism of her beloved offspring. Yet, this is the lyrical brilliance of this jewel of a book, ‘The Legend of Tessie Agana.’”

For those seeking to immerse themselves in the mesmerizing world of Philippine cinema and explore the life and career of Tessie Agana, “The Legend of Tessie Agana: Beloved Child Star of the Philippines” is a must-read. It offers a window into a time when the stars of the silver screen held a special place in the hearts of the Filipino people.

The book is available in paperback, hardcover and Kindle on Amazon in the US and available as an ebook in the Philippines through Bookshelf PH.

Up-and-coming film directors will soon have the chance to showcase their very own “kwentong panalo ng buhay” as part of Puregold’s recently launched, first-ever film festival.

Dubbed CinePanalo Film Festival, the event will be marked by largesse—Puregold is giving away millions worth of production grants to help fund the works of a select group of filmmakers that will participate in it. To date, the festival is arousing immense interest and the application process is well underway to determine who will be part of it.

Vincent Co, President of Puregold Price Club Inc., spoke about the exciting opportunities that await participants. “We want CinePanalo to uplift the spirits of young and gifted filmmakers who are just waiting for a break,” he said. “We hope that the financial grant and the sheer exposure they get will provide an important boost to their aspirations.”

Puregold’s CinePanalo Film Festival is looking for inspirational and heartwarming stories that conform to the festival’s official theme, “Mga kwentong panalo ng buhay.” Applicants whose creations reflect timeless Pinoy values about love, family, and hope will find vigorous support at the upcoming festival.

Festival director Chris Cahilig affirms this as he stresses on the significance of the festival’s theme. “CinePanalo aims to leave audiences with the warm and fuzzy feeling that truly great cinema can inspire,” Cahilig says. “On this note, we look forward to seeing the wonderful stories our local directors will earnestly share with the public.”

Only a select few that will best capture the spirit of the festival’s theme will receive the sought-after grants. Five amateur and professional directors will be given P2,500,000 each to produce a feature film for the festival. Meanwhile, twenty-five student filmmakers will be given P100,000 each to create shorts.

The completed films will be screened at a three-day festival to be held at Gateway Cinemas from March 8 to 10, 2024. The short films will also be posted on Puregold’s official social media pages such as the Puregold Channel on YouTube. These shorts will be featured next to Puregold’s successful retailtainment series such as “GV Boys,” “Ang Babae sa Likod ng Face Mask,” and “Ang Lalaki sa Likod ng Profile”.

“People need films that the whole family can enjoy,” Cahilig asserts. “At a time when films marked by violence or worldly desires are increasingly made accessible to more people, the CinePanalo Film Festival’s focus will be on more heartfelt and hope-filled stories.”

The festival was officially launched at a press conference organized by Cinema 76 Film Society last August 8, 2023. Since the announcement of the event dropped, festival officials have been receiving dozens of inquiries from interested filmmakers. An esteemed selection committee will sift through all applications to find the exceptional directors who will make up the festival’s lineup in March.

Interested participants may email thesecretariat@cinepanalo.com to receive the materials needed to apply. All applications and requirements must be emailed back by October 27, 2023. A shortlist of selected directors is expected to drop by November 6, 2023.

MANILA, PHILIPPINES – Filipino sci-fi movie “HITO” directed by Stephen Lopez recently bagged the prestigious Vienna Short Film Award at the 20th edition of the major international film festival, Vienna Shorts, this June. Produced by ANIMA’s Short Film Lab, the critically-acclaimed dystopian short-form movie bested other entries in the Fiction and Documentary (FIDO) category, earning Best Film for Live Action Film.

In his speech, Lopez expressed his gratitude to the people behind the success of  “HITO” as he called for a sustainable and safe work environment for all film and media laborers.

“This win is for all of you,” he said.

“HITO” is a vibrant and thought-provoking film that explores themes of friendship, self-discovery, and societal oppression. It took four years for Lopez to finish this masterpiece that delivers a compelling narrative fused with elements of science fiction, drama, and action.

The story follows Jani, a young girl living in an alternate version of Manila, who forms an unlikely bond with a rehabilitated bioweapon in the form of a catfish named Kiefer. The friendship leads Jani to confront the harsh realities of her violent society and the authoritarian regime that governs it.

“HITO” was screened at this year’s Vienna Shorts which ran last June 1 to 6, leaving audiences on the edge of their seats. FIDO category presents captivating films that offer unique and thought-provoking perspectives. These cinematic journeys explore the world in unconventional and compelling ways, inviting audiences to discover the present and the future of cinema.

ANIMA, a Philippine-based entertainment studio under KROMA Entertainment, is committed to quality storytelling. ANIMA Studios has garnered critical acclaim and won numerous awards for its production of visually stunning and compelling stories that cut across genres including “Leonor Will Never Die,” “OTJ: The Missing 8,“ and “Fan Girl.”
