This production Inspires to awaken the heroes in ordinary people by touching their hearts and minds and asking them these questions: (1) What is the best thing one can do for the country? and (2) Is the youth still the hope of our future? Though stimulating and at times thought-provoking this play seeks to remind people especially the younger generation of patriotism and the values where our nation was built. It leaves no concern whether the answers to the questions stated above will measure up to the selfless acts of our heroes who sacrificed and gave everything for the freedom and betterment of our motherland. This play also reflects the torment that our country has been facing in the likes of poverty, crime, corruption, and indifference that our heroes thought should have ended as we are liberated in the past but still affect us to this day.                                 A person in black shirt

Description automatically generatedDirector’s Note“MONUMENTO 1896” brings back the heroic quest of our national heroes and heroines depicting how they “think and feel” in the past. In contrast to how the present life circumstances shaped the mindset of the new generation and its impact on our culture which they fight hard to preserve. My inspiration in the adaptation of Ms. Jenny Simon’s play is to shine the spotlight on the great cause of peace won by the heart and heroism of our national heroes. Blending their supreme sacrifice and finest example of dedication with the daily problems of life faced by the free people in the present generation. Connecting the old wounds and grievances of our heroes in the past with the new generation’s lack of apparent love for our nation, forgetting our culture, having no clear vision of what peace should be, and to say the least failing to appreciate what we have today. Hoping that young people will gain a renewed sense of purpose and harness their power in making positive contributions to the betterment of our motherland. Keeping the balance between globalization and preservation of our genuine Filipino cultural identity. Generation Z are seen as increasingly apathetic, self-oriented and show an attitude of indifference towards the society, having a sense of entitlement and inflated view of themselves. After watching the play, I hope to awaken the sleeping heroes among us and sustain a continuing heroic tradition in our own humble way.  Rodel J. There’s a new talk of the town and it is breaking stereotypes and revolutionizing conversations on various perspectives surrounding manhood, machismo, and the male genitalia.

This came after the impressive stage preview/excerpt night of the controversial V-Roll Media production, the provocative stage play DickTalk. Held recently at the Mowelfund Dengcar Theater in Quezon City, the DickTalk preview saw each of the five cast members portraying their unique characters and voicing out their no-holds-barred sentiments on manhood and masculinity.

Under the brave direction of Phil Noble and produced by V-Roll Media Ventures and Trifecta Brand Lab, DickTalk will stage ten mind-blowing shows during its limited run at the RCBC Theater from April 15-23, 2023.

Led by a cast of five fearless actors in their bravest performances yet, DickTalk delves into the deep social issues on sexuality and relationships, exposing the complex web of pressures and expectations that shape men’s lives.

Inspired by the 1996 “The Vagina Monologues,” DickTalk presents five individual characters who embody the five unique yet highly relatable stories of men – a teenager (Gold Aceron), a trans man (Nil Nodalo), a sex worker (Jake Cuenca), a metrosexual (Mikoy Morales), and an old man (Archi Adamos). These colorful characters were born from the creative minds of the production’s concept creator, Edwin Vinarao, along with writers Ara Vicencio and Benj Cruz Garcia. The creative team molded each character with relatable experiences in a comedic yet insightful way that will open up a space for men to share their stories and explore the full range of their emotions.

Whether you’re a man, a woman, or anything in between, DickTalk serves as a platform for their viewers to expand their horizons, challenge assumptions, and encourage everyone to join in on the conversation about what it means to be a man in the 21st century. Buy your tickets now at https://premier.ticketworld.com.ph/, with prices ranging from P2,000 for Balcony, P2,500 for Lodge, P3,050 for Orchestra Side, to P3,650 for Orchestra Center. Be part of a remarkably orgasmic theatrical experience as DickTalk thrusts its way into your hearts (and crotches), cumming this April 2023.

The 70’s movie “Maynila Sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag” is set to return, not neither in TV nor in movies, rather than an exciting Musical adaptation of the film.

Julio Madiaga, a simple fisherman from the province, travels to Manila to find Ligaya, the woman he loves, after she went away with a mysterious woman promising a better future in the City. When he arrives, he becomes immersed in the city lifestyle and gets involved with its inhabitants experiencing extreme poverty, hard luck, and the overbearing need to grind for daily sustention. While Julio relentlessly searches for Ligaya, the city changes him little by little, becoming like an animal doomed to live only for survival in a wild jungle with no way out.

Maybe some of us, the youths or they so-called millennials don’t have that much familiarity to “Maynila Sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag,”  since it was way back 1970’s the time it was produced and out in the market.
Though Maynila Sa Mga Kuko Ng Liwanag had its revived or restored version, which adds to excitement and very timely to adapt the film as a musical.
From a Lino Brocka’s creation, now to the direction of the award-winning director “Joel Lamangan,” who’s now also creating a name in musical play directions.
Director Joel Lamangan is joined by stellar people and actors in the industry that makes it a no-wonder beautiful musical play — Lamangan gathered an artistic staff composed of people that he trusts can deliver the goods: Von De Guzman (Composer and Musical Director), Jose Victor Torres and Em Mendez (Libretto), Joey Nombres (Lights Designer), Douglas Nierras (Choreographer), and Jun Flavier Pablo (Production Design). Full House Asia Productions, Inc. acts as line producer.

Giving life to the characters in the musical are Arman Ferrer (Julio), Lara Maigue and  Sheila Valderrama-Martinez alternates  (Ligaya), Floyd Tena (Pol), Noel Rayos (Atong), Rafa Seguion-Reyna and Joseph Puducay (Imo), Aicelle Santos and Rita Daniela (Perla), Jim Pebanco/ Joseph Billezar (Mr. Balajadia), Khalil Kaimo (Gido), Jeffrey Camanag (Omeng), Romcel Binquis (Benny), Randy Rey (Frank), and Dulce and Ima Castro alternating as Mrs. Cruz.

The  movie we enjoyed back then year 1975 (Maynila sa Kuko ng Liwanag) is back! but this time it’ll be more interesting because it’ll be adapted into a musical play!

The cast of Maynila sa Kuko ng Liwanag was revealed! Julio Madiaga will be played by Ferrer, while Ligaya Paraiso will be alternated by Lara Maigue and Shiela Valderrama-Martinez.

Let’s hear from the cast some first dibs, insights and what to expect in Maynila sa Kuko ng Liwanag The Musical:

Ferrer as Julio Madiaga

Shiela Valderrama-Martinez as Ligaya Paraiso

Lara Maigue as Ligaya Paraiso

Press Release:

The guessing game is finally over.

Grand Leisure Corporation proudly reveals the lead cast of the much-awaited Maynila Sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag The Musical.  World class performers Arman Ferrer will be playing Julio Madiaga while Shiela Valderrama-Martinez and Lara Maigue will be alternating as Ligaya Paraiso.

Maynila Sa Mga Kuko Ng Liwanag The Musical  is based on the Edgardo Reyes timeless novel and inspired by National Artist for Film Lino Brocka’s classic film adaptation.

Bringing it to life on stage are Joel Lamangan (Director), Von de Guzman (Musical Director), Jose Victor Torres and Em Mendez (Libretto), Joey Nombres (Lights Designer), Douglas Nierras (Choreographer) and Jun Flavier Pablo (Production Design). Fullhouse Asia Productions, Inc. serves as line producer.

Last seen as Emilio Aguinaldo in Nicanor Tiongson’s critically acclaimed Steampunk Musical “Mabining Mandirigma” which won him the PHILSTAGE GAWAD BUHAY 2015 award for Best Featured Male in a Musical, Ferrer is a classical singer, a musical theater actor, and a choral conductor. He has played lead roles with Tanghalang Pilipino, Tanghalang Ateneo, and Dulaang UP.

The resume doesn’t stop there. Ferrer has been a featured soloist of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra and The ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also worked with the top conductors in the country such as Gerard Salonga, Josefino Chino Toledo, Jonathan Velasco, Eudenice Palaruan, Mark Anthony Carpio and Herminigildo Ranera.

Clinching the coveted role of Julio, says Ferrer, wasn’t a walk in the park.  It wasn’t an easy audition,  he recalls.  There was an intense dancing piece that we had to learn the same day and I must admit that dancing isn’t my forte.

Ferrer knows that Julio Madiaga, the rural hero of Maynila  who goes to the big city to find his beloved Ligaya Paraiso is not just any other role. “There is always excitement when you are asked to play a lead role. It’s always fun but there is also a big responsibility attached to it. Every time I play the lead role I make sure that I play it sincerely. I cannot allow my portrayal to be shallow and pedestrian. So I study the character as much I can in order for me to portray him as close to the truth as possible.”

Ligaya Paraiso is decidedly a tragic character, a young woman lured to find a better life in Manila only to end up mired in the oldest profession in the world. Shiela Valderrama-Martinez brings her vast theater experience to the role. Every role is a challenge. It is such an honor to play a part that was portrayed by the great Hilda Koronel in the movie adaptation.

In a career that spans 25 years and counting, Valderrama-Martinez has won citations as Best Actress in a Musical and Best Supporting Actress in a Musical and Best New Female Recording Artist in the prestigious Awit Awards.

She has just finished doing  50 Shades The Musical Parody,  and reprised the role of Kapitana Mary Jane in the 2016 rerun of the Filipino hit musical “RAK of Aegis” where she was nominated Best Actress in a Featured Role in the 2016 Gawad Buhay Awards.

Young soprano Lara Maigue also writes songs and has been in different parts of the world doing solo cultural concerts. A graduate of the UP College of Music, Maigue has appeared on television as one of the lead stars of TV5’s musical serye Trenderas.

Ligaya Paraiso, shares Maigue, is her most mature role to date.  I would always play the little girl in operas and an ingenue on TV so Maynila heralds that it is time to sort of grow up in the roles that I take on.

Tapped to play the other important characters in the musical are Floyd Tena (Pol), Noel Rayos (Atong), Rafa Seguion-Reyna and Joseph Puducay (Imo), Aicelle Santos and Rita Daniela (Perla), Jim Pebanco/ Joseph Billezar (Mr. Balajadia), Khalil Kaimo (Gido), Jeffrey Camanag (Omeng), Romcel Binquis (Benny), Randy Rey (Frank), and Dulce and Ima Castro alternating as Mrs. Cruz.

At its very core,  Maynila Sa Mga Kuko Ng Liwanag The Musicalrdblquote  is about love that will go the distance, both literally and figuratively. It is also about the loss of innocence and why in a dark, downtrodden jungle that is the big city, pure love is not given room to grow and thrive. It is set to soaring music and meticulously-choreographed dance.

Maynila Sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag The Musical  performances are slated on  September 30, 3:00pm and 8:00pm (Gala), October 1,2017 3:00pm and 8:00 pm October 4,2017 8:00pm, October 5,2017 8:00 pm,  October 6, 2017 3:00pm and 8:00 pm  All the performances will be at the KIA Theater.

The beneficiary of the musical is Gantimpala Theater Foundation, the company that spearheaded the National Artist Production Series in which short stories and plays written by National Artists for Literature and Theater are produced for the stage for people to enjoy and appreciate the artistic contributions and legacies of these Filipino literary and theater legends.

For ticket inquiries, contact  Ms. Bards Lapid at mobile number -09178466704, landlines 897 7142. 890 0853, 890606  or Ticketnet -9115555.

THE CLOCK IS ALWAYS TICKING
9 Works Theatrical presents tick, tick… BOOM!
Before the Pulitzer Prize and Tony award-winning RENT, Jonathan Larson wrote tick, tick… BOOM!, originally conceived as a “rock monologue” and was produced off-off-Broadway in 1990. It wasn’t after Larson’s death prior to the opening of RENT in 1996 that producer Victoria Leacock asked David Auburn (Pulitzer prize winner for Proof) to expand tick, tick… BOOM! and bring it to off-Broadway. Auburn reconfigured the “rock monologue” into a three-actor chamber musical and the reworked version debuted at the Jane Street Theater in May of 2003.
Compromise or persevere?
Jon, from tick, tick… BOOM!
The story is a familiar one, and is as relevant now as it was in 1990. tick, tick… BOOM! is the story of Jon, an aspiring musical composer who is about to turn thirty and is beginning to have doubts over whether his career choice was the right one. Pressure mounts when his girlfriend, Susan hounds him about leaving New York to start a family and seek out a more stable career. Added tension comes from his best friend Michael, a once-aspiring actor who gave it up for a lucrative career as a marketing research executive.
What is an aging artist who has yet to break out in his chosen field, his passion, to do?
The constant struggle of pursuing one’s passion over settling for a life that brings you no joy yet provides security and comfort is a question that pervades through generations. The ticking clock in the musical is representative of the artist’s anxiety, and it is always ticking.
How can you make someone take off and fly?
from tick, tick… BOOM!
On the twentieth anniversary of his Pulitzer and Tony award-winning musical RENT, there’s a hint of irony that Jonathan Larson’s first musical had found its audience after his unfortunate passing in 1996; first in 2001 off-Broadway, an American national tour, two London West End premiers, and several other productions all over the world. The character of Jon has been played by theater luminaries such as Raul Esparza, Neil Patrick Harris, and Lin Manuel Miranda.
For a limited run starting on October 1, 2016 at the CPR Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, 9 Works Theatrical brings tick, tick… BOOM! to the stage with the incredible talents of Jef Flores, Tanya Manalang and Ariel Reonal.
tick, tick…BOOM! is directed by Robbie Guevara, Daniel Bartolome as musical director, Elisanta Cortez as vocal supervisor, Arnold Trinidad as choreographer, Mio Infante as scenographer, Mickey Hirai as costume designer and stylist, Martin Esteva as lighting designer, Myrene Santos as hair and makeup designer, Philleep Masaquel as Technical Director, JC Inocian as photographer, and Maine Manalansan as graphic creative manager.
Heading the production team is executive producer Santi Santamaria, with Anna Santamaria as company manager, Sunshine Domine as production manager, Toff de Venecia as PR director, Jonjon Martin and Issa Tuason as PR managers, GM Hernandez as marketing manager, and Arma Bonilla as stage manager.

Earlier this year, Manila audiences were treated to a standing ovation-filled musical extravaganza in 9 Works Theatrical’s La Cage aux Folles – a critically-acclaimed musical comedy that had audiences laughing and crying faster than you could say ‘fabulous.’
A fun, frivolous romp through the streets of Saint Tropez and the French Riviera, the Tony Award-winning musical which returns to the RCBC stage from August 15 to September 6, 2015, follows the story of night club owner Georges, played by TV and film actor Michael de Mesa, and his life partner and the club’s star performer Albin, played by veteran stage actor and PHILSTAGE president Audie Gemora.
When the former’s biological son Jean-Michel (played by TV actor Steven Silva) brings home his fiancée Anne (played by Missy Macuja-Elizalde and Joni Galeste) and her ultra-conservative parents for a matrimonial téte-a-téte, pandemonium ensues, leaving no stone unturned, no feather unplucked, and no sequin unpolished.
Based on the 1973 French play by Jean Poiret, also the inspiration behind the Robin Williams’ starrer Birdcage, La Cage aux Folles was a musical that Manila audiences wholeheartedly embraced and called their own. “How everything came together,” recalls director Robbie Guevara, “the cast, the 9PO orchestra, the production team – it was like a perfect piece of pie that everyone just gobbled up!” The talent we assembled, executive producer Santi Santamaria adds, gave us constant tearjerkers, “a whirlwind of emotions and contagious enthusiasm from everyone onstage and off.” The amazing audience reception, Robbie recalls fondly, made the sacrifices and hard work well worth it.

Featuring tap-dancing, energetic musical numbers like We Are What We Are, The Best Of Times, and the anthemic I Am What I Am, and breathtaking costume changes courtesy of scenographer Mio Infante, Twinkle Zamora for costume execution, and the Fashion Designers Association of The Philippines (FDAP), the show promises to up the theatrical ante for its sophomore return, giving audiences both old and new, “a vivid, colorful celebration of theater magic” and a love story that is effervescent as it is timeless.
“For those who have seen and enjoyed the show, this is one musical you may want to consider watching again before it gets restaged after another 20 years,” says Santamaria. “Add that to the uncanny chemistry between acting juggernauts Audie Gemora and Michael de Mesa on stage,” he shares, and you’ve got time in the theater that is time well spent.
Appearing alongside Audie Gemora, Michael de Mesa,Steven Silva and ballerina Joni Galesteare some of today’s most respected and up-and-coming theater performers.Theater veterans Raul Montesa and Sheila Francisco star as Jean-Michel’s ultra conservative in-laws Monsieur and Mademoiselle Edouard and Marie Dindon. Miss Saigon alumnaAnalin Bantug returns to the stage as restaurant owner Jacqueline while Hong Kong Disneyland performer Noel Rayos plays Jacob the butler.
Joining them are the iconicLes Cagelles played by JP Basco, Mara Celine Javier, Randi de Guzman, Carlos Deriada, Chesko Rodriguez, Dindo Divinagracia, Cheeno Macaraig, James Stacey, Arnold Trinidad, PJ Rebullida, and TV and film star Rafa Siguion-Reyna.
La Cage aux Folleswill be directed by Robbie Guevara, with scenic and costume design by Mio Infante, and special participation of the Fashion Designers Association of the Philippines; choreography by Arnold Trinidad, PJ Rebullida, and Yek Barlongay; musical direction by Joseph Tolentino and Sweet Plantado-Tiongson; lighting design by Martin Esteva; technical direction by Dong Calingacion; hair and makeup design by Myrene Santos; and additional costume execution by Twinkle Zamora; photography by Leo Castillo and graphic design by Larry Palma.

Press Release:
For its 2015 season opener, Gawad Buhay award-winning theater company 9 Works Theatrical hearkens back to the sequins, costumes, feathers and glamorous fervor of the 70s as the company that brought you Grease, They’re Playing Our Song and Sweet Charity brings to life one of Broadway’s most beloved musicals – the three time Tony Award-winning musical hit, La Cage Aux Folles.
La Cage Aux Folles – 9 Works Theatrical

Literally meaning “the cage of mad women,” with folles being a slang term for effeminate homosexuals, La Cage Aux Folles takes a sumptuous dip into the love story of Georges (played by TV and film actor Michael de Mesa), owner of a popular nightclub in Saint-Tropez, and his life partner Albin (played by veteran stage actor Audie Gemora) who is the club’s star attraction.
Set against the backdrop of the 70s and the French Riviera, a time when the gay revolution was high and nigh, the musical in which the Robin Williams’ Hollywood hit Birdcage was based on, has earned critical acclaim worldwide including the Tony and the Olivier through its many-storied glossy productions around the globe.
The musical is based on the 1973 French play by Jean Poiret and ignites when Georges’ son Jean-Michel (played by TV actor Steven Silva) brings home his fiancée’s ultra-conservative parents to meet him and Albin who he affectionately calls ‘mother.’ Mayhem erupts, role-playing and hilarity ensue, and family ties and personal beliefs are put to a boiler, leaving no feather unplucked and no sequin unpolished.

‘Cause when I feel glamorouselegant, beautifulthe world that I’m lookingat’s beautiful too

Whilst 9 Works Theatrical artistic director and La Cagedirector Robbie Guevara and 9 Works Theatrical associate artistic director and La Cage scenographer Mio Infante have assembled a who’s who from the showbiz, dance, ballet and theater world to breathe new life into this production, a huge impetus fell upon the duo’s hands. Besides the music and characteristic flair, how could you best transport the audiences of today into the sparkly goodness of the 70s?
One word: costume.

So when my spirit starts to sagI hustle out my highest dragAnd put a little more mascara on

“While Robbie used the song ‘I Am What I am’ as a springboard for the production, visually I decided that the song ‘A Little More Mascara’ would be a good entry point or mise-en-scene,” intimates 9 Works Theatrical’s associate artistic director Mio Infante. In the process of digging deep into the psyche of Zaza, Albin’s frivolous, fabulous stage persona, and his ravishing 10-person corps de ballet otherwise known as Les Cagelles, the duo opted to manifest the nostalgia and mystique of the drag shows of the 70s and 80s as opposed to drag as we know it today.
“Drag then was more feminine. They really imagined and believed themselves as women,” shares Infante – the characters of Georges and Albin having themselves worked for the famed Lido de Paris cabaret show along the Champs-Élysées before arriving at Saint-Tropez. It is this proclivity for enchantment and ‘illusion’ that the two characters bring to their own parochial revue.
For inspiration, Infante looked towards the Folies Bergère, a cabaret music hall that was very much rooted in the zeitgeist of the 1890s, the Belle Epoch, all the way through the Années folles (or the golden twenties). Mio also found himself drawing upon the likes of turn-of-the-century Russian-born French artist and designer Erté, and closer to the time, the flamingo showgirls from Las Vegas, to add boddess and authenticity to the scenes involving the Cagelles.
“We wanted to hark back to the 1987 London production of La Cage– the glitz, the glamour, and femininity of the folles as opposed to the 2010 Meneir Chocolate Factory production which transferred to Broadway.” It was a version that, although very much well received after bagging the Tony and Olivier, was pluckier and scaled down. “We want to dazzle audiences with the full, sparkling regalia of the Cagelles,” shares Robbie Guevara.

And everything’s ankle straps, Maribou, ShalimarIt’s worth sucking in my gut and girdling my rear‘Cause everything’s ravishing, sensual, fabulousWhen Albin is tucked away and Zaza is here

To elevate this act of nostalgia, Robbie and Mio approached the prestigious Fashion Designers Association of the Philippines (FDAP), headed by Edgar San Diego, to weave together elaborate, one-of-a-kind creations for La Cage Aux Folles’ iconic musical finale – “what will surely be a treat for our audiences as these talented and well-respected designers are as much a part of our history as they are creative horsepower,” shares executive producer Santi Santamaria.
Among the famed designers whose creations you’ll see onstage are John Abul, Danilo Franco, Gener Gozum, Edgar Madamba, Ole Morabe, Oscar Peralta, Lito Perez, Nholie Pilapil, Rholand Roxas, Edgar San Diego and Fanny Serrano.
“We’re truly honored to have them onboard,” shares Infante, adding that Repertory Philippines and theater stalwart Baby Barredo has opened her company’s costume trove to this production of La Cage Aux Folles. “We will be unearthing costumes from Rep’s 1988 production, and from other shows like M. Butterfly as well.” A visual tour-de-force and theatrical spectacle indeed!

So when it’s cold and when it’s bleakI simply rouge the other cheekFor I can face another dayIn slipper satin lingerie

Appearing alongside Audie Gemora, Michael de Mesa and Steven Silva are some of today’s most respected and up-and-coming theater performers. Theater veterans Raul Montesa and Sheila Francisco star as Jean-Michel’s ultra conservative in-laws Monseiur and Mademoiselle Edouard and Marie Dindon. Miss Saigon alumna Analin Bantug returns to the stage as restaurant owner Jacqueline while Hong Kong Disneyland performer Noel Rayos plays Jacob the butler.
Joining them are rising stars of the ballet world Missy Macuja-Elizalde and Joni Galeste alternating in the role of Anne, Jean-Michel’s fiancée while the iconic Les Cagelles will be played by JP Basco, Mara Celine Javier, Randi de Guzman, Carlos Deriada, Chesko Rodriguez, Dindo Divinagracia, Cheeno Macaraig, James Stacey and TV and film star Rafa Siguion-Reyna.

Press Release:

“WHEN LOVE IS A MATTER OF WHEN, NOT WHY”
On its fifth year, Philstage Gawad Buhay award‑winning theater company, 9 Works Theatrical, invites you to look back, and move forward, with one of the greatest and most poignant musicals of all time, Jason Robert Brown’s “The Last Five Years.”
In a heartbreaking and moving tale of “he says, she says” told forward and
backward, we meet rising young, novelist Jamie Wellerstein and struggling
The Last Five Years - 9 Works Theatrical
The Last Five Years – 9 Works Theatrical
young actress Cathy Hyatt. She begins at the rueful end of their marriage and moves towards a hopeful beginning. He begins as a giddy, young 20‑something who has just met the girl of his dreams but winds up making less than favorable choices – a story all too familiar but structured in a way that isunique whilst set to Brown’s emotionally raw and honest music.
An intimate two‑actor musical which won Jason Robert Brown Drama Desk awards and nominations following the show’s Off‑Broadway premiere in 2002, “The Last Five Years” has been dubbed as one of the best shows of
2001 by Time Magazine, contrasting grim endings with promising new beginnings.
Ben Brantley of The New York Times wrote, “Brown captures the delicious, embarrassing energy of being young, gifted and meteoric in New York City” – infusing musical styles that exact from a number of musical genres: pop, jazz, classical, folk, rock, Latin, and even klezmer.
The show couldn’t have been a more fitting choice to kick off 9 Works Theatrical’s fifth year. “Five years na tayo? Eh ‘di let’s do The Last Five Years!” quips 9 Works Theatrical artistic director Robbie Guevara. One of Manila’s most exciting theater companies that brought you “RENT,” “Wedding Singer,” “Sweet Charity,” “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” “They’re Playing Our Song,” and most recently, “Grease” (which bagged the 2013 Philstage Gawad Buhay award for Best Musicale of an Existing Material), 9 Works Theatrical returns to its humble roots. “I meant that as light joke but my partners took it seriously and liked the idea so much. And since I love the musical, I didn’t object at all when they agreed to do it,” he adds.
For the much‑awaited return of “The Last Five Years” to the Philippine stage after more than a decade since it was last performed at the RCBC Theater, 9 Works Theatrical welcomes a new Jamie and Cathy in two of Philippine theater’s brightest young stars – Nikki Gil and Joaquin Valdes. Returning to the stage after her PMPC Star Awards for TV win for Best Single Performance by an Actress and 2013 Philstage Gawad Buhay nomination for “They’re Playing Our Song,” singer‑actress Nikki Gil will be playing the role of
Cathy Hyatt, an ambitious, fresh‑faced girl in a new relationship who is stunned by a betrayal that she is only beginning to come to terms with. As with the deterioration of most relationships, however, there are two sides to every story.
Bagging the 2013 Philstage Gawad Buhay award for Best Featured Actor in a
Play for his performance in “Red,” actor and commercial director Joaquin
Valdes returns to his musical theater roots to play the role of novelist Jamie
Wellerstein, an ambitious lad who is lovable yet makes unintentional choices
that sabotage his own happiness.
“9 Works Theatrical began by showcasing the brilliance of Jason Robert
Brown’s music in ‘Songs For A New World.’ Our last five years have been
nothing short of remarkable and as we celebrate our anniversary, it’s but
fitting to mark this milestone with the staging of what is arguably Jason
Robert Brown’s most popular musical. ‘The Last Five Years,’ is an apt title to
match our special occasion,” says executive producer Santi Santamaria.
A limited number of performances are available for fundraising and blockbuying.
