“The Juans,” not your ordinary Juans

Asked how to describe their group, glam pop, rock, alternative and soul band, The Juans, are one in saying that this is “not your typical boy band.” For sure this 5-man combo are looking more and more like a boy band when they’re on stage, but what really sets this “boy group” apart is their musicality. They can actually play their instruments and are pretty good at it.

Singer, keyboardist Carl Guevarra says “it’s what we’ve discovered about one another ever since the start. We can actually play music and that set the tone for what we want to be since day one.” And that one-visioned direction is to play heartfelt, energetic and fun, live music.

The Juans are Guevarra, bassist-singer Jason De Mesa, guitarists-singers vocalist Japs Mendoza and Jiad Arroyo and drummer-singer Daniel Grospe. Originally conceived as a sing and dance act, the group quickly morphed into a tight music making unit upon discovering each other’s propensity for making music.

“We were originally built to be in the mold of all these famous foreign boybands. And for a very short time that’s who we were,” Guevarra shared. “But then we realized: it would be more fun for us if we can play our own music live, rather than singing along to a minus-one.” Soon enough, the group completely ditched the pure, pa-pogi group route and went to work at their sound.

“There was a season in our lives as a band, that we lived together. We all believed that was the way to be better musicians. We all thought: Ok let’s do this, we are going to rehearse our stuff every waking hours of the day. That would be our commitment to The Juans as a group and to the music,” Guevarra added.

The Juans were practicing during the day in a studio right beside their apartment, and to support themselves, were auditioning for gigs in the evenings. “That was a hard life,” says Grospe, “we were living as full-time musicians during the early days when gigs are hard to come by. But we stuck to it because we believed in The Juans.”

All that perseverance and sacrifice did its work. These days, The Juans are one of the more energetic and entertaining bands out there plying the live gig circuit. Their setlists are a solid mix of Top 40 current pop, some classics, and sing along rock tunes. The Juans must be doing something right in their nightly gigs because so far, just by word-of-mouth, the group has amassed twenty thousand-plus likers on their facebook page. “We’re proud of that,” Guevarra stated, “that’s one ‘like’ per audience that we met on our gigs and that’s fifteen thousand people reached during the last year and a half of our gigging lives.”

The Juans are also writing their own music. Some of those songs reached Viva Records during one of their shows, and that convinced the long-standing record label to sign them to an exclusive recording contract. “We feel like all the hard work is paying off. Signing with Viva Records is just the start and it’s all going to be good from here on. We’re all excited,” Guevara confidently shared.

Of course it’s going to be all good from hereon. After all, nothing is impossible if you’re willing to put in the work. Especially for these boys: “mga simpleng Juan na may pangarap sa buhay.” The Juans’ EP album is scheduled to be released this August 2015.

‘The Gifted’ movie review

I am a lucky one, to had witnessed this movie twice already, one during the advanced screening last September 1 at Megamall Directors Club and last night, September 2, during ‘The Gifted’ Premiere Night, which was also held at Megamall, thank you so much Viva for being always accommodating, that’s why I really love this movie outfit.

Firstly, what I love in this movie in the first place is that, it is not just the normal love story movie that revolves in a love triangle etc that bring hurts and kinda dark, while this movie on the other hand is really light, and funny. This movie is not predictable, I love how the story telling goes and how this movie tackle matters like issues of which is better to have? beauty or brains? insecurities, religion, science etc makes it more reasonable to be watched for me.

James Reid and Nadine Lustre (Jadine) now Kapamilyas!

James Reid and Nadine Lustre rose to fame via their romantic-comedy movie (movie adaptation of Diary ng Panget book) ‘Diary ng Panget’ which was under Viva Films, was a certified blockbuster hit! Then followed by a another movie adaptation of ‘Talk Back and You’re Dead(book),’ this time, the movie was co-produced by Skylight Films of ABS-CBN, which was also undeniably strong in the cinema scene. This just proves Jadine loveteam has a really big market share.

No wonder why ABS-CBN Network decides to get back their once owned before, James Reid, who was then the PBB Teen Clash Big winner that was way back in 2010. Seems strange that after being the big winner of PBB James’ career as an actor did not bloomed well, though he has been given projects before like Shoutout, GoodVibes and Pintada, he was even paired with Devon Seron and Yen Santos but didn’t made such impact.

James Reid returned to the scene under Viva, together with Nadine in their launching movie DNP, in which James was repackaged, James talents were rediscovered, that he can sing, dance and he transformed into a hunk. Many are really wondering how James Reid regain and recovered in showbiz as well as many are wondered of what is magical between him and his loveteam Nadine Lustre of how they became this famous without even having these TV shows, projects to serve as an ignition to their loveteam. Well Viva is known to have these great artists, talents even before. James Reid and Nadine Lustre are just some of Viva artists who are visible on TV as kapamilya like Vice Ganda, Anne Curtis, Cristine Reyes and more.

These two sisters were close not until they were in love with the same man(Sam Milby)! by the name of love, they will transform themselves into goddess of beauty and compete with each other to win Sam Milby in the movie. ‘I’m done with sexy roles’ – Cristine Reyes

During the interview of Cristine Reyes in the recent premiere/press preview of her latest movie ‘Trophy Wife,’ she said that her role in ‘Trophy Wife’ might be her last sexy role becuase she’s already done with these sexy roles and wanted to focus on the other genre such as comedy, drama etc.

“I’m not saying na what I do is bad, but its just that I think that I’m done with it na,” said Cristine.

Reyes revealed what triggered this realization of her,

“Maybe, because right now, I’m being serious about thinking about my future, my plans, plus I’m gonna be honest like every Sunday I go to the church na, I wanna follow how to be a good Christian. It’s not good I’m here doing this movie and then I’ll go to church, parang hindi sya nag coconnect,” Cristine explains.

Cristine Reyes, Derek Ramsay, Heart Evangelista and John Estrada star Viva and Multivision Pictures’ latest movie offering ‘Trophy Wife,’ a film by Andoy Ranay. Unlike the usual love triangle in the previous ‘wife-centered’ movie, Trophy Wife tackles a more intense storyline of being a Trophy Wife and also involves conflict between brothers and sisters. Trophy Wife is now showing (July 30, 2014) in Cinemas nationwide.

Star Cinema has releases the music video of their latest movie offering for the month of May “Maybe This Time” starring Sarah Geronimo and Coco Martin. The themesong “Maybe this time” is sung of course by the lead star of the movie Sarah Geronimo.

Sarah Geronimo plays the role of Steph Asuncion and Coco Martin plays the role of Tony Bugayong. Steph and Tony will fell for each other unfortunately their relationship didn’t gone well tends Steph to leave Tony without raising the reason. After a long their paths intersect again, will they be able to rekindle the past and have a better relationship this time, maybe?

This is the debut team up of Sarah Geronimo and Coco Martin in the big screen, therefore the movie is expected to be hit.

Aside from Sarah and Coco in the movie, they are joined by stellar cast Ruffa Gutierrez, Ogie Diaz, Dennis Padilla, Kathleen Hermosa, Buboy Garovillo, Sharmaine Buencamino, Marlann Flores, Zeppi Borromeo, Minne Aguilar, Alex Castro, Garlic Gracia, Devon Seron and Cecil Paz.

“Maybe this time”, directed by Jerry Lopez Sineneng and co-produced by Viva Films is set to hit the theaters nationwide on May 28, 2014.
