Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival proudly announces its partnership with Movie Workers Welfare Foundation, Inc. (MOWELFUND). This exciting collaboration aims to champion the Philippine film industry, particularly the young and emerging filmmakers, and narratives highlighting Filipino life and culture.

Founded in 1974, MOWELFUND is a non-stock, non-profit foundation focused on social welfare, education, and industry development, with a dedicated mission to support the diligent professionals within the Philippine movie landscape.

Boots Anson Roa-Rodrigo, Chairman of MOWELFUND, shares her gratitude. “Thank you, Puregold, for CinePanalo. [Through this initiative], Puregold offers assistance to filmmakers [in featuring] films that delve into wholesome family themes that define everyday Filipino slice of life.”

The multi-awarded movie and television personality says this is a “win-win” for both MOWELFUND and Puregold. “Panalo ang Puregold for instilling family values through the potent medium of film. Panalo ang MOWELFUND Film Institute for offering logistics to young and enterprising filmmakers. Panalo ang aspiring film students and enthusiasts [because] CinePanalo helps them bring to life their dream projects through the magic of film.”

Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival recently unveiled its list of grant recipients–six directors for the full-length films and 25 student filmmakers for the short films–carefully selected from over 200 pitches nationwide. Slated for a grand debut at the Gateway Cineplex 18, Araneta City, from March 15 to 17, the festival’s selections embody the theme “Mga Kwentong Panalo ng Buhay,” weaving stories of kinship, perseverance, and the Filipino spirit.

In a gesture of gratitude, MOWELFUND acknowledges Puregold’s support for their 50th-anniversary medical and dental mission, where grocery gift bags will be bestowed upon the deserving members of the film community.

As the Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival approaches its zenith, Puregold senior marketing manager Ivy Hayagan-Piedad articulates, “With heartfelt appreciation, we recognize MOWELFUND and all our partners for their integral role in not just showcasing these inspiring Filipino narratives but also in fortifying our collective contribution to the flourishing Philippine movie industry.”

Six much-coveted film grants now await participating filmmakers in the highly anticipated Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival, which initially promised only five slots for the full-length film category. Following meticulous evaluation of the outstanding shortlisted entries, the six finalists, consisting of four seasoned and two aspiring directors, will move on to the final stage of the competition: film production.

Vincent Co, President of Puregold, obviously thrilled about the development, stated, “The vision for Puregold’s CinePanalo Festival is to establish it as a platform for local filmmakers to showcase their talent. I am especially delighted to see two up-and-coming directors earning well-deserved spots in the roster, highlighting the panalo spirit and inclusivity of this competition.”

Making it to the prestigious list of finalists is Bacolod-based director and “newbie” in the industry Kurt Soberano, with “Under a Piaya Moon”. An actor, director, and writer, Soberano has so far crafted short films such as “Golden Bells” (2022), “Sa Balay ni Papang” (2021), and “Azucar” (2019).

Also earning a coveted slot for the grant is award-winning filmmaker, writer, and actress Sigrid Bernardo, with “Pushcart Tales”. Known for her outstanding work in acclaimed films such as “Anita’s Last Cha-Cha” (2013), “Kita Kita” (2017), and “UnTrue” (2019), Bernardo has received awards and nominations from several local and international film festivals.

Another accomplished director and actor, Raynier Brizuela, makes it as a finalist in Puregold CinePanalo’s official full-length film category with her entry, “Boys at the Back”. He is known for his contributions to films like “Video City: Be Kind, Please Rewind” (2023), “Mang Jose” (2021), and “Asuang” (2018), and his nominations from FAMAS and Cinema One Originals Digital Film Festival.

Puregold CinePanalo also awarded a film grant to Joel Ferrer for his entry, “Road to Happy”. An actor, director, and writer, Ferrer boasts an extensive portfolio of 15 films and series, including “Hello World” (2013), “Baka Siguro Yata” (2015), and “Woke Up Like This” (2017). He has also received accolades from local and international film festivals.

Rounding up the initial list of five finalists is Carlo Obispo, with “A Lab Story”. An accomplished writer, director, and producer, Obispo has made a mark with notable films including “Purok 7” (2013), “The Baseball Player” (2022), and “Gasping for Air” (2016), and has likewise received awards from reputable award-giving institutions.

In a surprising twist, Puregold CinePanalo boosted the winners’ stock with the “Producer’s Choice,” which was awarded to Eugene Torres for his film “One Day League: Dead Mother, Dead All”. This expanded the final count of full-length category finalists to six slots.

The talented Eugene Torres, an actor, producer, and director, is noted for his short film “Yujin” (2017) and contributions to films such as “Deleter” (2022) and “Gatilyo” (2019).

Each of the six finalists will receive a grant of P2,500,000 to aid in the production costs of their full-length films. Likewise, finalists are entitled to free color grading by Optima Digital, and a grocery package from Puregold. All film entries must have a minimum runtime of 90 minutes. The deadline for their submission is set for March 1, 2024.

The selected films will have their premiere showing at the Gateway Cinemas in Araneta City Cubao during the Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival proper, which runs from March 15 to 17, 2024. Potential regional screenings may follow.

The distinguished selection committee for Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival includes veteran film and television director Jeffrey Jethurian; award-winning filmmaker Victor Villanueva; Puregold senior marketing manager Ivy Hayagan-Piedad; Lyle Gonzales of Republic Creative; and Puregold CinePanalo festival director Chris Cahilig.

Ivy Hayagan-Piedad shares her excitement over what comes next. “Navigating through so much talent and creativity during deliberations was no walk in the park. The finalists’ films are very refreshing, and I cannot wait for people to witness these cinematic masterpieces.”

Meanwhile, Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival Director Chris Cahilig highlights Puregold’s role in this endeavor. “We will forever be grateful to Puregold for making this possible. It’s not just about seasoned directors showcasing their works; it’s also about allowing fresh new talents a shot at their aspirations. Thank you, Puregold, for giving space to diverse voices in the film industry.”

Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival previously named 25 promising student filmmakers as finalists in the short film category, underscoring the commitment of Puregold to foster emerging talents. By providing a platform for young filmmakers to show their creativity and vision, the festival also reaffirms Puregold’s advocacy for the Filipino youth.

Among the many exciting events lined up for participants, one notable highlight was the official press conference for “Ang Lalaki sa Likod ng Profile,” which took place on the first day.

In attendance was award-winning filmmaker and producer Chris Cahilig, who gave the welcome remarks, while director Victor Villanueva both entertained and inspired the audience as he later related his experiences behind the scenes.

“Ang Lalaki sa Likod ng Profile” is the latest retailtainment offering from the Puregold Channel on YouTube, and came in the wake of “GV Boys” and “Ang Babae sa Likod ng Face Mask”. At the press conference, Wilbert Ross and Yukii Takahashi conveyed their own musings on the story, and showed how onscreen chemistry can translate into real-time attraction as they charmed the audience. The dashing Wilbert especially impressed attendees with a song number during the intermission.

Brilliant star power is set to light up Puregold’s upcoming Tindahan ni Aling Puring Convention on May 18, 19, and 20, with a posse of entertainment celebrities expected to show up at the World Trade Center in Pasay City, the event’s venue. Entertainment celebrities such as David Licauco, Yassi Presman, Jane de Leon, Francine Diaz, BINI, BGYO, and more are set to make their presence felt.

Attending as well will be Wilbert Ross and Yukii Takahashi, lead actors of Puregold Channel’s latest digital series, “Ang Lalaki sa Likod ng Profile”. The tandem will be joined by other cast members at a press conference on May 18 that will discuss Puregold’s newest project in its retailtainment portfolio.

The Puregold Sari-Sari Store Negosyo Convention is an annual gathering of thousands of Aling Puring members from all over the country, with over 30,000 small business owners signing up for the event. Featuring the theme “Sari-Saring Saya, Sari-Saring Benta,” the convention marks the company’s milestone of amassing 800,000 small business owners nationwide. These are the establishment’s primary customers—sari-sari store owners, bulk buyers, online sellers, caterers, and operators of karinderyas, canteens, and bakeries.

Aling Puring members enjoy perks and privileges that help them grow and expand their businesses. At the forthcoming Puregold Sari-Sari Store Negosyo Convention, for instance, they will be spurred to engage with some of the country’s brightest business minds at free seminars; enjoy value-for-money deals; and get instant freebies.

“Ang Lalaki sa Likod ng Profile” airs on the YouTube Puregold Channel every Saturday as part of the brand’s portfolio of retailtainment projects. The company’s retailtainment concept stresses on connecting to viewers online with riveting, relatable stories.

The series tells the story of Bryce (Wilbert Ross), a young video game enthusiast who ventures into the local dating scene with virtual wingman Angge (Yukii Takahashi). Totally relatable are the comedic, kilig-worthy situations that ensue as Bryce and Angge form a bond online and later sense a strong chemistry between them.

Wilbert Ross cheerfully looks forward to this year’s TNAP convention as he anticipates seeing the show’s ardent fans up close. “Sobrang grateful talaga ako for the opportunity na binigay ng Puregold to be a leading man,” said Ross. “Kaya sobrang excited na rin ako na magpasalamat ng personal sa mga fans namin sa TNAP Convention.”

Also in attendance will be the show’s supporting cast that includes Kat Galang (Genski), Migs Almendras (Ketch), Marissa Sanchez (Bessy), Star Orjaliza (Yaya Aimee), Moi Marcampo (Chili Anne), TJ Valderrama (Cyrus), and Anjo Resurreccion (Jerry).

Two of the creative visionaries behind the series—producer and award-winning filmmaker Chris Cahilig and Victor Villanueva, the director of the show—will be at the event as well. Cahilig will share some thoughts during the press conference.

Villanueva, meanwhile, speaks on his continued collaboration with Puregold. “It’s a thrill to have the chance to keep telling stories for my fellow Filipinos,” he said. “Puregold understands the kind of entertainment that touches everyday people, and it’s a great honor to continue working with them to bring these stories to life.”

Vincent Co, President of Puregold Inc., emphasizes that this is an exciting opportunity for fans of the show. “Viewers have so far shown a warm and enthusiastic reception to ‘Ang Lalaki sa Likod ng Profile,’ he points out. “This is a great chance for them to see members of the cast, live and in person, and check out what makes the series a must-see entertainment.”
