Heartstopper actor Kit Connor said that he was compelled to come out as bisexual because certain internet users accused him of “queerbaiting.”
After a month of quiet on social media, the 18-year-old actor came to Twitter on Tuesday, November 1, to proclaim that he was bisexual.
“Back for a minute. I’m bi. Congratulations on forcing an 18-year-old to come out.

I believe some of you missed the show’s message. “Bye,” Connor said, lamenting the fact that he had to declare his sexuality, something he had wished to keep hidden, in order to battle online rumors.
The actor recently came under fire for holding hands with Maia Reficco, a co-star in the forthcoming film adaptation of A Cuban Girl’s Guide to Tea and Tomorrow. Some internet users assumed the actor was straight and accused him of “queerbaiting,” or pretending to be gay.
The debate about Connor’s sexuality is especially poignant for the actor, who portrays a gay character, Nick Nelson, in the LGBTQ+ adolescent thriller Heartstopper. Following the publication of the article, fans of the program, as well as the show’s creator, Alice Oseman, expressed their support for Connor.
“I truly don’t understand how people can watch Heartstopper and then gleefully spend their time speculating about sexualities and judging based on stereotypes”

Fans also critiqued the show’s handling of bisexuality in regard to Connor’s experience, emphasizing that viewers have no right to know personal details about the actors.
Heartstopper is a Netflix coming-of-age drama based on Oseman’s webcomic and graphic novel of the same name. The plot centres around Charlie Spring (Joe Locke), a homosexual high school student who develops love feelings for his fellow classmate and seatmate, Nick. The sitcom has garnered positive feedback for its LGBTQ+ portrayal, and production on the second season has commenced.
Kit Connor is an English actor known for his work in films such as Get Santa and Rocketman, as well as in shows such as His Dark Materials. His portrayal of Nick Nelson in Heartstopper has nominated him for Best TV Performance in the Dorian Awards, as well as Rising Star in the National Television Awards
